5 stars (My new hero) - Melody Beattie is my new hero. She has walked through the trenches, fought the battle and lived not only to tell about it, but to offer hope for those of us who are still in the battlefield or still shell shocked from the trauma of it all. I recognized myself in her descriptions of a co-dependent, sometimes painfully so. I had to put the book down a time or two, because I felt she came right off the page to knock me into reality. I heard of the book from Dr. Irene's verbal abuse site [...] which stated this book is a must read for those of us with codependent behavior. I have to agree. I am looking forward to applying my newfound knowledge and the confidence acquired from it in oncoming life situations. I hope to become my own new hero. 4 stars (just what I needed) - I am currently reading this book and loving it. I am taking a long time to finish it because it is so deep. It is easy reading, but in order to get much out of it you really have to read it slowly and of course change your wrong behavior, one step at a time. I like the fact that the author tells you that change does take time. It seldom happens overnight. Very comforting for someone who wants to see huge changes overnight. I also like that she encourages you to have a relationship with God. He is the only one whom we are supposed to be codependent with. 5 stars (Great Product!) - I bought this product after I read an article in a magazine. It is great! I had it over a month now and each workout has been different. I have not lost any weight, but I am losing inches. Shorts that didn't fit me at the beginning of August now do! I noticed I have more energy and I am definitely not as crabby. It is a great product for someone who wants a workout without having to go to classes. 5 stars (Wonderful!) - I bought this item about two weeks ago and have been using it for a little over a week now. I THOUGHT I was in pretty good shape before Mya arrived--and oh, how she proved me wrong. There were a few days at the beginning there where I was seriously starting to consider if she might be trying to kill me. But, already I can feel a difference in my muscle tone (the soreness has yet to abate) and I am feeling much better about myself. Mya's encouragement, organization and spontanaety in routine have been a refreshing and thoroughly enjoyable (okay, so maybe not always SO much enjoyable) experience. My only critique is that sometimes she forgets to warn you when she's changing excercises (as in some of the yoga poses, in which you CANNOT see the screen), and sometimes she's a little fast in changing excersises or positions (but that may be just me). And I recommend a strong sense of humor for anyone trying the yoga poses for the first time--I think I wore out the tutoring button on those. So, in short, I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking to shed a few pounds, build some muscle, or just get in better shape. 5 stars (Outstanding choice, for someone who's tried EVERYthing) - I can't believe how much I've stayed motivated to work out. 5 stars (Christ-Esteem) - Benner tackles a topic fraught with heated debate from all sides. Secularist would tell us that there is no "sacred call" to self-discovery, it is simply a normal, human need. Some Christians would tell us that there is nothing "sacred" about self-discovery, it is an abnormal part of our fallen self-centered nature. Wisely, Benner traces the history of self-understanding through the writings of giants in the faith like Augustine and Calvin. These two historical theologians, along with many others, understood what we have forgotten. Created in the image of God, as we understand ourselves "Coram Deo" (in the presence of God, from God's perspective), God enlightens us to understand something more of Who He is. In other words, knowledge of God and of self, are intricately interwoven. Rather than a journey of self-esteem or self-discovery, the Bible invites us on a journey of Christ-esteem where we discover who we are in Christ and to Christ. In Christ, we are saints. To Christ we are adult sons and daughters. The journey, taken biblically, brings the focus back to God and others. As Luther taught, when righted with God, we are returned to our natural stance of arms lifted up to God in worship and arms stretched out to others in fellowship and stewardship. Benner first walks his readers through the journey toward knowing God. This foundation begun (for it never ends), he then shows how to mortify (put off) the old false self in the flesh and how to vivify (put on) the new true self in Christ. 4 stars (Open Says Me) - This book is an extraordinary manual for emergency entry procedures. The directions are clear and concise, and the numerous illustrations are very helpful. This book can teach you how to bypass a lock with a bottle of bleach -- who knew ?? 5 stars (Far from easy ....) - I had been trying to open an old S&L moneybox for some time - the lock mechanism is "simple" per this book. Curiosity can be frustrating. I didn't want to spend any money on tools for a one off project (I ended up doing this and bought another book). The intellectual satisfaction was worth it. I'm interested in antiques so may get some payback for learning in the future. (I can now also open simple padlocks, and furniture locks, with an improvised tool in fairly quick time.) The information on getting into a locked car is easy to follow; I knew some of this before buying the book but the process will be easier in future. The stuff on handcuffs also appears straightforward - if you use them for business or pleasure - I don't - this could be worth reading. This is a practical book but hard work and requires practice. Worth reading if you have a real interest in locks and will practice. 5 stars (Great book.) - I have been using a canned program to manage my company's web site, but I wasn't always able to do fine tune the pages the way I wished. So I decided to teach myself HTML. Working through this book, I was able to learn step by step how to design pages and manipulate the images and text. The book is very clear and concise and the exercises the author gives at the end of every chapter are extremely useful. 4 stars (Up-To-Date Now - Thank you.) - Having been out of web Development for a couple years, I needed confidence that my basic understanding was up to speed. This book HTML and XHTML in 24 hours, brought me up to date rather quickly. It provided the foundation that I needed both to build some basic web application prototypes, and to be able to begin reading more specialized books on Web Development. 4 stars (Journeying With MaryJane) - This is more than a book, which is why the title is composed of Idea,Cook and Life. It's hefty, filled with evocative, inspiring photographs, good recipes, and the encouraging story of MaryJane Butters' journey to her life today in Idaho. Along the way: working as a park ranger, farming organically, surviving as a single Mom, and establishing today's business. I had ordered this book as a 55th birthday gift for a friend, but will need to order another copy for her (this one is now "used": coffee rings and recipe notes...try hers for watermelon salsa.) And even though it's big, you CAN read it in bed! 5 stars (Incredible!!!!!!!!!) - This is not only a great resource...but it is inspiring...beautifully illustrated...took me on a journey of what is really important in life..to simplify...experience and create. 5 stars (Great book!) - I love this book! Podcasting- Do It Yourself Guide

5 stars (Excellent resource and guide) - I've been listening to Todd's podcast for the past few months and have decided to join the podcasting bandwagon. The book is very well written - covers all of the topics required to define, create, record and publish your podcasts. The book saved me countless hours of frustration and pointed me in the right direction for recording equipment. A great book for anyone thinking about getting into podcasting or understanding what podcasting is all about. 4 stars (A solid introduction to Podcasting, told by someone with a lot of in-the-field experience!) - As someone who is only just dipping my digital voicebox into the podcasting ocean, this DIY Guide was extremely useful. It guides you through the basics of setting up on the computer you've probably already got with a cheapo microphone and freeware audio editing with Audacity. It also shows how a few more steps can lead to a far more professional sound with relatively minimal effort and expense. I also like the frequent "notes" which highlight important terms and ideas, many of which I know, but some of which were new. Cochrane's explanations are always easy to understand. The only downside is that this book was released before iTunes support for Podcasting became the pod-word of the month. While the iTunes influence might be slightly over-hyped, it is changing the podosphere. 5 stars (Excellent resource, great confidence builder) - This book is more than just a how-to book. Between this book and the author's web-site full of friendly people and helpful advice, the average DIYer will find the knowledge and confidence to tackle nearly any tile project. If funds aren't an issue or you are a book junkie like me, I'd recommend you own this book and "Setting Tile" by Michael Byrne as both books cover different subjects to different depths, but if you only buy one book, "Tile Your World" by John Bridge is the one to own. 5 stars (Wonderful resource that keeps on giving) - As a dedicated DIYer with no tiling experience, I needed a book that would provide a good overview as well as the details to actually get the job done. This book presents the necessary information in a manner that benefits novices and pros alike. I was able to read the book cover to cover without losing interest. I then dug back into the book to re-read material to gain a more thorough understanding. When I've not been able to figure something out, I've posted questions directly to an active web-based forum hosted by the author (great resource and the book makes a pointer to it--that's the "keeps on giving" reference in the review title and it was worth the price of the book alone!). The only ding I'd give the book is that a good portion of the images are printed too small. Good clear explanations, precise drawings, and a great resource for experts and novice alike. 5 stars (EXCELLENT RESOURCE BOOK) - i am a 3rd year arch. student with some minimal understanding of general wood construction.Coming from a design oriented school they dont really teach any practical knowledge of the field but i personally think that i need to know some of it to get myself prepared, even before i graduate.This book helps a lot.It has a lot of information regarding the common practices we find outside with adequate amount of details to make you understand.Picture is worth a thousand words and this book is all about that.You do need to have some basic knowledge though to fully understand.The only con i would consider is that scope is only limited to typical residential wood construction.For project details of bigger size and greater complexity you need to look further. 3 stars (It's Ok, There are Better Books) - It is all about graphics in this book, a method of presenting that I enjoy but it needs some text and why behind those graphs. 4 stars (Unique Slant) - It's evident Ms Susanka has fashioned a niche for sleek, tasteful and refined living. She seperates style from fashion with a keen eye set for timeless architecture. She stresses quality over quantity in square footage. I was pleased with the quality of these books. 5 stars (These books will NOT save you money.) - It's not about that. If you're looking for information on building a smaller, lower cost home, these books won't help much. In general, the author's message is to spend MORE per square foot, and learning to get more use out of a smaller space. On the other hand, if you like your neighborhood, but feel you need a bigger house, these books may give you some ideas on remodeling (instead of moving) - which could save you a lot of money by not buying a bigger home that you hate just as much as your old one. I think these are fantastic books. Excellent photos and floor plans illustrate each point in a crystal clear fashion. The author starts with a few basic concepts and shows their execution in various ways in different houses. A great tool for anyone planning to buy, build or remodel. In the editions I received, both books have 10" x 10" pages. Excluding the Introductions, Afterward, etc... First book: 187 pages; probably more photos than text; medium-large, easy-to-read print. This covers the basic concepts with dozens of examples. Second book: 250 pages; probably more photos than text; medium print (a bit smaller than the first book, but still easy to read). How to Make Patent Drawings Yourself- A Patent It Yourself Companion- 4th Edition

5 stars (Do It Right - Do It Yourself - And Save Money!) - On the last couple of patent applications I submitted, I ended up doing 90% of the drawings myself because it turned out to be easier than continuously having to correct the mistakes of the draftsman. My attorney said that my drawings just needed to be shaded and cleaned up a bit, and have the legends applied, but otherwise what ended up going into the applications was essentially my drawings with a few more bells and whistles. His draftsman had just put them on a light table and copied them as is. But I still had to pay for the drawings! This book was able to get me the rest of the way there by detailing the regulations that the USPTO puts on drawings. They're not really difficult, but they ARE specific. Don't be intimidated by them. The very simple drawing style specified by the USPTO is to allow clear reproduction and printing. My attorney charges $295 per figure, and one page can have 2 or 3 figures on it! The last application we submitted had about a dozen figures total. Some of the expense is the work of integrating and describing the drawings, but it is guaranteed to save you money if you do your own drawings. Besides, this ensures that you will be satisfied with the quality and accuracy. Don't forget you can also have the draftsman do the difficult 3-D "Figure 1" bit, and you do the simpler stuff. Like me, I'll bet you'll find it easier than you thought! 5 stars (Outstanding Step by Step for the Do-it-yourself Inventor) - I have all of David Pressman's books on patenting, you know why? Because I filed my own patent using these books. That's how good they are. They really do have step by step instructions. He also has software that helps you prepare the docs. I sort of used that as well. Again, reasonable priced, and useful. I strongly recommend these books for anyone that wants to File a Patent. (Two I'm thinking of are Scott Landis' The Workbench Book : A Craftsman's Guide to Workbenches for Every Type of Woodworking and Understanding Wood Finishing by Bob Flexner.) This is a wonderful book that you should buy. It is abondantly illustrated, is not necessarily targeted at accomplished enthusiast (I only own a few power and hand tools, no table saw, jointer, planer, and still do not feel left behind when reading this book), and well chaptered. It is not meant to be read from page 1 to page 300, but rather on a when-needed basis. I would have liked it to be a bit more developped on each subject, but at 300 pages it is already a big book. Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes

5 stars (Fantastic Book for an Advanced Beginner) - My favorite feature of this book is the emphasis on defining basic concepts clearly and in a logical order. I've bought a number of these self-teaching computer books over the years (several on Access), and this is the first one I've gotten any real good out of. I'm half way through, and find I'm learning a lot about databases and how they work, not just the SQL language. I've been writing databases in Access for years and always found it a struggle. I'm having a much better time with that now, and I've got to believe it's due to studying the materials in this book. I'm half way through the book and still going strong. I never made it more that 25 pages into any of the other books I bought. Maybe I won't have to go take an SQL class at the local community college after all! That should tell the story right there. 4 stars (Takes longer then 10 but great) - This is an excellent reference and quit source for anyone trying to get the feel for SQL programming. Simple enough for a novice user and techical enough to more seasoned. I don't use heavy sql everyday so I often forget syntax especially when working between different DB environments. This book is a quick refresher that allows me to pick it up and find what I need right away. The chapters are split into specific funtions (i.e. inserts, queries, grouping etc...) So you know exactly where to look. For a beginner the cost to familiarize oneself can't be beat. I would buy this book before the more expensive learning books because this one hits the raw basics without diverging into other topics and causing confusion. ...

1 stars (REfinishers need not apply) - In reading information on the author--that he runs a finishing and refinishing business--I thought this book would contain help in boths areas. I was misled and this book is of no use to me. My plans were to REfinish a houseful of oak cabinets and for information on that, I will now have to look elsewhere. For someone wanting to finish new, never before finished wood, this book looks very complete and detailed. 5 stars (Great book, great pictures, super informative) - A great a-z guide on finishing, clear pictures and well written. So much information to absorb, maybe too much. I've reread it many times and use it often as a reference. The best finishing book Iv picked up so far 5 stars (Great for us beginners!) - I have been woodworking for about 6 years now but only as a hobbiest. I loved this book because even though I have several other finishing books this one was much more through. It gives several options on how to do just about every aspect of finishing. I loved the index in this book. It actually has a photo for each of the chapter showing what it pertains to. Another wonderful feature of this book are the step-by-step photos within each chapter. Great "how to" photos. ...
