5 stars (A Godsend) - I was desperate for information to prepare for my licensure exam. This book was extremely thorough, accurate and incredibly helpful. I had gathered numerous books and notes to study from, but most of what I needed was right in this book. I recommend it to anyone studying for psychology, counseling, social work, or other related licensure/certifying examinations. 5 stars (Study for NCE) - This is an easy to use, easy to understand tool to help you do your best on the NCE test. You really need the CD's " Vital Information and Review Questions for the NCE and State Counseling Exams" to use along with this book, to get the maximum benefit. It seems expensive, but you need to consider how much your counseling license is worth to you. 5 stars (All you need is this book and a couple months...) - This was the ONLY book I studied for the NCE. I did not dig up my notes, and I did not reference other texts. I read it cover to cover twice, marking the questions I did not guess right the first time and returning to them until I could get them right. The best part is the explanations. There were actually a couple of questions in the book that the author got wrong or that were disputable. On the whole, however, this book is all you will need to study and pass. The test makes you feel like you brought a violin to a flute concerto, but your score will confirm that the book was the correct sheet music. ...

5 stars (Helped me pass.) - I passed both tests on my first try. Some people told me the hardware exam was easier than the OS exam. I found the opposite true. Anyway, pretty good book. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR Text Revision Diagnostic and Stat

5 stars (DSM IV-TR) - This book is absolutely necessary if you are training to become a psychologist or an LPC. It is very comprehensive for giving diagnoses. 4 stars (Useful but not that revised) - We are in the in-between time, the DSM-IV being over a decade old, and the DSM-V being due out at some unspecified date, but giving the general publication rate of the major DSM revisions and the advance of general knowledge, it cannot be too far into the future. I have the DSM-IV, burgundy-cover edition, and have dipped into the DSM-IV-TR on occasion from the library, but have found no particular reason to need to purchase the TR silver edition for the kind of work I do. This is a guide that is useful, indeed required, for graduate students in mental health and psychological fields, and for professionals working in those fields. As a pastoral care provider, I find it useful in many cases, but will warn that it is not a definitive tool to be used by itself in the hands of laypersons (which, in terms of professional psychology, I most certainly am). Symptoms and diagnoses are difficult to isolate, and not to be left in the hands of amateurs - to that end, I often worry about the general availability of books such as this (I have a similar fear for the PDR, the Physicians Desk Reference, whereby people try to self-diagnose and self-medicate based on their reading). The DSM-IV is not without controversy - indeed, the whole psychological enterprise is not without controversy. However, this is the current standard by which the profession measures itself (sometimes a bit in opposition, but there are few who hold the DSM to be meaningless).
