Waking the Dead- The Glory of a Heart Fully Alive

2 stars (Try it at your own risk) - I certainly wouldn't be the first to question the wisdom of meddling with nature to the extent outlined in this book. Down the ages, commentators from Mary Shelley to George A. Romero have illustrated the potential negative consequences of achieving what this book shows you how to achieve; the "glory" can soon turn sour indeed. Credit is certainly due to the author for his revolutionary method of integrating the four "streams" to achieve a state of total animation. Now that this knowledge has been made so publicly available, though, we await with foreboding the terrible consequences for humanity... 5 stars (Waking the Dead) - This is a life changing book. It is very well written. The author is insightful and touches on how we can really live life. There are just a few books that I have read that have had a real impact on my life. This is one of them. I have the audio version and it likewise is terrific. 5 stars (Waking a Long Forgotten Heart) - I have had experiences with John Eldridge before in "Wild at Heart," but "Waking the Dead" awakens a many times forgotten side of Christianity. Eldridge brings to light the side of humans so often forced into hiding by society, sin, and religion. Jesus Christ came to sacrifice his all for our hearts which when turned over to Him offer a new depth to the Christian walk. Not only does the author offer therapy for a wounded spirit, but also he equips the reader with a strong exhortation in Christian warfare about which I often forget but about which Paul teaches us at the end of Ephesians. Live from your heart, but guard it as a fortress for God. All in all, this book deserves a read by any Christian looking for a new depth or perspective. Personally, I would recommend it for everyone! ...

The Sacred Romance- Drawing Closer to the Heart of God

5 stars (...Out of the dark night he leaps like a stranger to cripple and to bless...) - My guess is that readers who think they already have a good handle on life and Christian doctrine will probably be disappointed with this book. Likewise, this book will disappoint readers who want to see concepts like faith, hope, love, idolatry, grace, election, predestination, etc., expressed in religious language with which they are familiar, and not in language (and metaphors) in which people of our culture commonly express what is important to us and what drives us. Many thoughtful, ardent, traditionally-minded, well-meaning Catholics, Calvinists, etc., will not like this book. Readers, however, who are desperately asking questions like, "Why do I have to hurt so much? When can I finally get out of the situation I am in? Why am I so burned out even though I have done everything I know to be faithful to Christ? How can I be so lonely? Why does this addiction keep re-surfacing? What is God doing here?" will probably find this book a God-send. I re-read this book recently at precisely such a time in my life, and it was wonderful. It reminded me that God is not after my religious devotion and doctrinal comformity, he wants my *heart*, the deepest center of myself, and that he may well invade my life in a way that hurts me, that strikes me as ruthless and devastating, in order to get it. God is committed to my sharing and radiating his glory--nothing less. Amazing. In my view, one of the best aspects of this book is its emphasis not just on what God has promised to share with us (beauty, intimacy, adventure, glory), but *when* he will share it. Yes, we get a substantial foretaste now, but our deepest longings will be finally, fully satisfied only when we see him. Until Jesus comes back, God will mess with our lives and our idols in order to make sure that we don't get distracted by anything less than the awesome destiny he is preparing for us. As eloquently expressed toward th...

The Anger Workbook Minirth-Meier Clinic Series

1 stars (Wasted Money......) - Wow, I know that I can be a fool, but I was definately robbed of $16.00, even after reading the front and back of this very deceiving book! I mean, I know that I need help with anger, but this book just seemed to make me ANGRIER! I spent $16.00 on a wanna-be Bible (Something I could have gotten for free at my FORMER Church) and the contents only seemed to anger me more! Not only did half of their text not make sense, their descriptions of anger and recognizing anger only seemed to categorize the entirety of this country! The verbage used and perspective in which this ~story~ is told borderlines an autobiography of a man named "Tom". If you like a good bedtime story, like to waste time and money, and do not need real anger management help, then by all means buy this "novel". My opinion~ Dont waste your time or money, you already wasted enough reading my review! Kyle.... 5 stars (Great help!) - This book changed the way i veiw anger. Yes, i am a bible believing Christian and this book does use the bible as a source of reference. I learned so much about my anger and the anger of others. It encouraged me and gave me tools to work with to choose to control my anger. I can't wait to read their next book! I also understand how to respond better to angry people. It is a real eye opener! 5 stars (Anger Managment) - This workbook provided immediate results on how to deal with anger. I did not believe anger was an issue with me until I read and understood anger also comes in the form of frustration and irritability. In reading and working through this book I found that I have a choice on how I respond to situations and it's up to me to decide how I will deal with issues in my life. I am glad I purchased this book to use as a reference or to offer to my friends. ...

The Barbarian Way - Unleash the Untamed Faith Within

4 stars (Oh Yeah!) - Great book for anybody who is burdened for the lost and believes they are being called by God to do more than the Christian next door. I recommend this book to everyone thinking of going into ministry or missions, or for anyone who knows someone already involved. Maybe it will help you understand why they act like they do. Peace! 4 stars (Where Do We Go From Here?) - McManus says it like it is. The church has become a tame, domesticated version of what Jesus seemed to introduce. Nearly every page of this book highlights invaluable concepts for the Christian life as it was meant to be lived. I can relate to the author; I was born and raised to walk the barbarian way--living my faith in a way that demands obedience at any cost. While others have tackled similar subjects, they often times seem to be full of bitterness and rebellion toward the church at large. McManus never gives off that sense of a grudge; instead, he wants to raise the church from its slumber. His "barbarian" way is a way of sacrifice and servitude. This is no mamby-pamby gospel that he's talking about. This is a commitment to a life lived for Jesus, no matter the cost. I loved everything this book had to say. My only complaint is what it didn't say. It didn't give us any practical ways to walk the barbarian way while dealing with the existing church. How do we make these concepts real without seeming divisive? Or, if we are to be divisive for a purpose, how do we go about it with Godly accountability? These are issues I've wrestled with for years. This book encouraged me to keep wrestling, but it failed to answer some of my deepest questions. For those who are still "civilized," this book might change your world. For those still trying to reconcile McManus' concepts with everyday church life, you will be inspired. The question remains, though...Where do we go from here? 5 stars (Insightful and quick read...) - Erwin McManus once again demonstrates how he underst...

The Maxwell Leadership Bible Developing Leaders From The Word Of God

5 stars (Very Good!!!) - This Bible is very good It really helped me out and even as a young person I was able to understand what John MAxwell was saying and I think that this is the right way to get anyone started on leadership or those who are interested in taking their skills to the next level! 5 stars ("Wow--far exceeded my expectations!") - I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this work exceeded all my expectations on what a Bible with such a title should look like! Maxwell is known as the peerless master of teaching leadership qualities. His secular works are required reading, and nothing comes close in excellence. How does he introduce such qualities into a Bible, though? Wonderfully! Maxwell takes every possible aspect of leaderhip (dozens and dozens) and ties them into Biblical characters and situations. There is enough teaching and study material here to occupy one's time for years, and none is fluff. This is more of a textbook than a Bible, but I guarantee--there is nothing else like it! Unlike so many other attempts which end up balancing a secular principle on a thread of Scripture, Maxwell really searches the Scripture, and the applications he gleans are relevant! If you ever hope to teach or learn virtually every leadership quality, tenet, or principle found in the Bible--your search is over. Maxwell has found them all! Also recommended: 'With Joseph in the University of Adversity' ('The Qualities of an Effective Leader' chapter), and 'The Mizraim Prinicples', authored by Dr. Jerry L. Parks 5 stars (Excellent Resource for Current and Aspiring Leaders!) - In my humble opinion, The Maxwell Leadership Bible is better than any of the books, simply because Maxwell takes the core concepts from his various books and shows how they are applied in the Bible. For example, Maxwell includes: 1. Excerpts from the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and 21 Indispensible Qualities of a Leader books. 2. Over 100 biographical profiles from people in the Bible. ...

Captivating - Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman-s Soul

4 stars (Understanding and Healing a Woman's Soul.) - If your a man and just can't seem to figure out woman, then this book is not necessarily for you. I would encourage you to read John Eldredge's, the co-authors other book, "Wild at Heart". It touches on everything in this book, and will also help you understand yourself better as a man, which in turn will help you come to a better understanding of what makes woman tick. If you are a male that is into counseling woman then I would recommend this book to you. From my interaction with woman over the years, I can see this book bringing healing to many a woman's life, as long as they give the book a chance and are honest with themselves. I do see some anger in some of the other reviews, but I really think these reviewers are just missing the point. As a man I do find the type of woman that the author tries to lead all woman to become, to be the only ones that I truly find Captivating. And no matter what some people would say, as a woman you are entitled to be Captivating. So buy the book and enjoy becoming all that you can be. 5 stars (Every man and women on earth should read this and Wild @) - Hello!! Jesus came and died for our sins. We have been released from the curse of sin and death, this includes the curse issued in the Garden. I believe that this book should be read in conjunction with Wild at Heart for we can not understand our roles as men and women unless we understand each other. John has taken on an incredible task - to understand a woman's heart. He did the only thing that he could do, he asked his wife to help. They have taken modern culture and showed us the desires reflected in unsaved and saved humanity. Then they showed us how to meet those desires - to pursue a romantic relationship with God. In order to give ourselves permission for this romance, they had to first show us that God needs us - no one else on earth can fulfill the purpose that God created us for. Then they showed us th...

The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader- Becoming the Person Others Will Want to Follow

4 stars (Good) - The book gives practical, digestible essence of leadership. This makes it much better to digest as one can read and not be overwhelmed with pages upon pages of info that will keep you from reading it. The points are specific, he uses stories to highlight the quality, as well as some practical ideas/recommendations for each quality. It also gives you a suggested way to read as one should not try to read it in one sitting, but read one quality and meditate/live it for a day to have it sink in. 5 stars (Don't Let Your Skills Keep You From Leading) - Don't Let Your Skills Keep You From Successful "Are you a thinker, a doer, or a clutch player? The better you are, the greater potential for influence you will have with your people" -John C. Maxwell In order to excel you need to develop your skills... in order to lead effectively you need to evaluate how you lead then practice how those you lead respond to your leadership. John C. Captivating- A Guided Journal - Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman-s Soul

3 stars (Not quite captivating...) - I love the book by the Eldredges entitled CAPTIVATING, but I was a little disappointed in the companion journal. I'm anxious to get back to the book and maybe hold off on the journal for a later time. ...

5 stars (Great Stuff without all the fluff) - Maxwell does a great job of breaking down the essentials of Leadership without turning it into rocket science. Winning With People - Discover the People Principles that Work for You Every Time

4 stars (Another Winner!) - First of all I want to confess that I am John Maxwell junkie. I not only thoroughly enjoy his books but they help me in becoming a better person. This book is written where every chapter is golden and yet able to stand alone. You can simply open the book to any chapter and it will enrich you. Even though the chapters are segmented into 5 logical sections. I especially liked the chapter entitled, "The Pain Principle: Hurting people hurt people and are easily hurt by them". This chapter increased my empathy and sensitivity for hurting people. It just makes sense that those that lash out are really hurting people. I gave this book 4 stars simply because his best work by far was, "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership". As helpful as this book was I simply tried to read a chapter each evening before going to sleep. Like a nutritious light snack that won't keep you up all night. 4 stars (Impressed with reservations) - This is the second book I've read from John Maxwell. Overall, I found the book to be well written, personal, and filled with principles, explanations, and anecdotes. Each principle is explained in a manner that should strike a cord in many people. He supports the concept embodied by the principle with anecdotes, both personal and historical. If you are looking for a book to help with interpersonal relationships, this is a good book to to start with. John covers a lot of ground in this book. That would be my major criticism of the book. There are many, many strategies and approaches, and keeping track can get confusing. They are well organized. This will have to be a book that you refer back to as issues in your life come up and you are looking for help. I think Covey's work is more managable and priciple system oriented, but that shouldn't detract from John's work. There is an unlying system, but John's approach appears to be more of set of tools to help you, with each dealing with a specific type of problem. 5 stars (...

Developing The Leader Within You

5 stars (Insight at a legible level) - I have found John Maxwells work to provide a great deal of useful thoughts, hints, and guidance, and all done without needing a masters degree in linguistics to decipher his language. He provides a good base for moving ones self into a thought process like a leader, with plenty of usable applications and steps. Very useable, and very inspiring. Something I am sure that will help everyone. 4 stars (Developing leadership qualities ) - Developing the leader within you gives basic instructions for developing leadership skills. John C Maxwell, author of this book believes that being a leader is not necessarily an in born skill but rather can and should be developed. This book stresses that even natural leaders need to learn appropriate skills in leadership in order to utilize their skills to the maximum. Basically his book is telling us that being a leader and being a manager are not the same. Managers are short term oriented. They are concerned with the day to day operations and are adept at controlling organizing and monitoring resources. Leaders have a shared goal with their team, they process the skills to motivate the team and inspire as well as energize the team toward a shared goal. John Maxwell's book also focuses on priorities. He fells priorities never stay the same and are constantly changing. John Maxwell's book also focuses on priorities. He fells priorities never stay the same and are constantly changing. A good leader possesses the skills to create positive change. Followers don't like change. Resistance to change is universal. Change disrupts routing and creates a fear of unknown. After reading this book, I felt that it was very informative, and helpful. It was a easy to read book, to help anyone become a better leader. By the end of reading this book I knew that I already was a better leader. The book also increased the awareness in feeling and thought to help the leader develop an effective team. T...

Why Men Hate Going to Church

4 stars (Some excellent points) - I don't know that I agree with everything the author has to say, but he makes some excellent points. I think the hardest part is getting the clergy to acquiese to these ideas. I don't know any off hand who could actually pull this off. The ideas however are very pertinent and if the church could do this I think we would all benefit by more men in the pews. 5 stars (A must read for all church leaders) - I must admit, when I first ordered this book I was half expecting to get some shallow criticism of evangelical churches and Christians by someone with a hostile attitude toward both. Much to my pleasure and surprise, what I got was a well written, well researched analysis of the current state of the church and its effectiveness in reaching the men in our culture for Christ. The author has really done his homework. He lays out the facts in a very clear, easy to understand manner. He is painfully honest about where todays Christian churches are in relation to this topic. If you are a fan of the status quo or a male basher, this book probably isn't for you. But if you are a minister or lay worker who want the church to fulfill the great commission in the 21st century, you must read this book and take it very seriously. 4 stars ( Why Men Hate Going to Church ) - I think he's right on target. This is a "must read" for church leaders serious about reaching men. ...

Wild at Heart- Discovering the Secret of a Man-s Soul

5 stars (Every man should read this book!) - Frankly, I do not understand how any male Christian could give this book anything less than 5 stars. Outside of the Bible, no book has impacted my life in the way this one has. From the first few pages on I was hooked because this book was speaking to something that I knew in my heart was true. John Eldredge has a deep desire for men to recapture a Godly, masculine identity that is lacking so much in our culture today. This goes way beyond just being a nice guy. He challenges men to capture the danger and risks that come from a deeper relationship with God. The author backs up these ideas with solid scriptural teaching and the simple fact that the truthes expressed in these pages strike a nerve at the very center of your heart. This book is a must read if you are a man and especially if you have had the feeling that there is something missing with the our current Christian culture's attitude toward true masculinity. 5 stars (Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man's Soul) - At age 64, I have read many books, novels, autobiographies, et. al., but I have never read a book written in TRUTH and LOVE like this book is. EVERY man should read it, and then, should re-read it with his wife...and maybe even his daughters and sons....this is the most dead-on, God-filled book, save the Holy Bible, I have ever read!!!!!!! John Elredge should get a Pulitzer Prize for this book. It is his heart, his soul, his Lord! If there were 10 stars, I'd go a 10!!!!!! Blessings! Ken Skeen 5 stars (Wild at Heart-A Must Read for every Baby Boomer Guy) - At the urging od 3 guy friends I ordered Wild at Heart and I must say I could not put it downn. I'm a 52 year old "successful" Baby Boomer" who couldn't figure out why I was unsettled with my life. Wild at Heart Field Manual- A Personal Guide to Discover the Secret of Your Masculine Soul

4 stars (Finally, An Answer) - The book is expansive, deep and yet fairly easy to read. In straightfoward terms the author shares his observations about men and women. He carefully builds his case that God made man and woman to reflect the LORD's own masculinity and feminity. Each has a role to play in shaping and developing the world; when sin entered these roles were corrupted and the Enemy has worked hard to keep us in the dark about what it means to be masculine. John Eldredge takes time to explore the things that motivate men and how many of us avoid being the man God made preferring to pretend to be something we are not. He shows how men were made for God's glory and how they can recover what was lost in the Fall. 5 stars (Not Just a Study Guide...) - The Field Manual is not just one more study guide to grind out some more revenue from a popular book. It is a structured journey deep into the heart that goes far beyond the original book. God will change the man who slowly, humbly, prayerfully works through this book. Profound and challenging for both individual and group study. 5 stars (Christianity Today's online article) - Check out the article at on Eldredge: (...) Yes, he is a radical, but in his defence - so was Jesus. It's been a while since I've read Wild at Heart (WaH), but I recall it being refreshing to my faith, just as Eldredge in person has been refreshing to me. I've had the privilege of listening to him speak a few times. I've read all his books (haven't seen the videos) and I get them confused, but what I've really taken away from the man is his vision of the way church should be, that is a band of brothers. Granted, he doesn't delve into any 'bands of sisters.' Probably only because that would be outside the scope of this book? Anyways, Jesus exemplified intimacy through discipleship with three men and he also kept a group of buddies known as "The Twelve." And from that he left a legacy. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership

5 stars (Top book for Top leaders) - Most of the time, we just don't know how to get to the next level of happiness and effectiveness. As a result, we flounder, hoping that some random act of character will propel us to the next level, and having no clue what that next level might be. And we stay right where we are. One author said that, "Lunacy is doing the same things repeatedly, expecting different results." and in those days, we exemplify that statement. Then along comes an idea or a series of ideas that changes the landscape. John Maxwell's book on leadership is one of those books. Here we find the ideas we need to hone our character and make our organizations more effective. In effect, while learning to lead others, we actually learn how to lead ourselves. This is true leadership and true influence, and you would be remiss not to take these ideas in and change your path. 3 stars (The book starts well, but quickly degenerates) - I have been in various professional and volunteer leadership positions for more than twenty years, but I am always looking for new ideas on how to become a more effective leader, so the 'Irrefutable' title of this book, plus the recommendation of others, caused me to plunk down a few dollars for the book. I was fairly impressed by the first couple of chapters, and felt that the Chapter where John makes the assertion that "Leadership = Influence" was VERY insightful. In fact this chapter alone was worth the purchase price of the book. So why do I only rate it with 3 stars(and almost rated it 2 stars)? Because of John's overemphasis in later chapters on the personality of the leader and his dismissal of 'difficult people'. Part of the extreme challenge of leadership (especially in volunteer organizations) is dealing effectively with the 'difficult people' in the organization. John blithely suggests to either 'co-op' them, replace them, or get them to quit. It should be so easy - but in reality, it is not. You cannot get peo...

The Purpose-Driven Church

5 stars (One of the most important books...) - you will ever read. I believe that this book is a revolutionary approach to church building. Thousands of churches have used this text to advantage - including my church. 5 stars (Even better the 2nd time!) - This book is one of the best books on churches that I've read...and as a seminary grad (twice) I've read a few. I recently pulled the book off my shelf, blew off the dust, and read it again. I think I've heard everything Rick teaches about church through other speakers and in other books, but the book makes me realize how prophetic Ricks words were back in the early 90's when he was putting this stuff in writing. Pastors and churches in North America are still trying to get it right...and still failing. Contrary to critics, I find Warren's book to be very biblical and right on target. Too many NA churches are trying to do church the wrong way. The Purpose Driven Church is a very easy to read, process book that pleads with churches to adapt methodologies to bring our culture the unchanging gospel message of Jesus Christ. From pastors to seekers, this book will help all realize what a New Testament church should look like in today's culture. 5 stars (This book was not what I expected at all!) - I approached this book with a skeptical and critical spirit. (Too many "seeker sensitive" churches water down the truth in an attempt to reach people. And they end up with shallow church members that are lacking in genuine Christian faith.) However, this book really softened my critical spirit. Some of my opinions were based on misconceptions and misunderstandings. I was impressed by Rick Warren's reasoning and ideas. What surprised me the most is the high expectations of his actual church members. (And members must re-new their membership once a year.) If members don't meet the expectations, they are dropped from the membership roll! The book said that 500 - 700 people a year are dropped from the membership roll...

Leadership 101- What Every Leader Needs to Know

4 stars (Leadership 101 by John Maxwell) - Many people attain positions of leadership in the organisations, community and other spheres of life but with no guidance of what good leadership entails. John Maxwell did a good job of writing a small book packed with useful guidance on how to be an effective leader. He divided the book into three parts. The first part describes how one can develop as a leader, whilst the second part explains the traits of a leader and the last part is on the impact that a leader can have on people. The need for a clear vision as a leader becomes very apparent after reading the book. As a leader one should be aiming at producing a lasting legacy, that is, one should be aiming at making a difference to the lives of others. Followers should be willing to follow you because of the positive influence that you have on people as a good leader. To be an effective leader, one needs to continually develop oneself. High quality leadership entails empowering others to exercise their huge potential for the benefit of the organisation or the team. Followers have to trust you as a leader and trust has to be earned from one's actions. One cannot hope to be an exceptional leader unless one is self-disciplined. Leadership starts with being able to lead yourself before one can lead others. The book is written in simple easy to follow style which makes it readable by anyone at leadership position in an organisation or other sphere of life. 5 stars (Vision) - A leader cant lead without vision. He/she cant reach that vision without people who are willing to follow and share that same vision. And in order for others to follow that leader has to show integrity, passion and earn respect in the process. He/she has to put the interest of the organization and its people above his/her own personal interests... then he/she can earn the title of a leader. 3 stars (A good entry level book into the world of leadership.) - John C. Maxwell has apparently spent the ...

Attitude 101 - What Every Leader Needs to Know

5 stars (Attitude determines Altitude) - This is a great book. I am a big Maxwell fan, and I loved reading this book. It is a compilation of chapters from some of Maxwell's other bestsellers. This book serves as a great reminder of how important our attitude is in every area of life. 5 stars (90% attitude and 10% situation!) - There is NOTHING more important than attitude when it comes to success in leadership! No, I mean it. In general this is just an all around true point: success is 90% attitude and 10% situation. How you deal with things as a leader has a profound impact on those around you and once again, John has produced a wonderful work that conveys all kinds of fantastic points that will help you develop and grow as a leader. I highly recommend it. (...) 5 stars (I give it 5 because it serves a good purpose.) - It's a good book to read, I love it.
