The Basic Practice of Statistics- Third Edition

1 stars (A jumble of deviations) - This book was poorly planned. To a student learning statistics, this book can be very confusing. Contrary to traditional textbooks with a review problems section at the end of each chapter, the problems in this book are intermingled throughout the chapter! Therefore meat of this book - explanations of concepts - gets disbursed over many pages. This makes it difficult to outline the important concepts for reviewing. Margins and empty spaces are cluttered with irrelevant photography and trivia, making it difficult to concentrate. Another annoyance is that the author stuffs "cursory information" that doesn't apply until later chapters. A person trying to grasp the main points is suddenly confronted with an incomplete and unfinished idea followed by a tiny footnote saying "you can skip this page until Chapter 22." It would be a great help if the author included more graphs and pictorial representations so that the reader can visualize the concepts. If this book is required for a class, you should get the most from the professor's lecture or else you're in serious trouble! 4 stars (A Decent Primer for Statistics) - Before you use this book, make sure you understand the author's purpose: "Although the book is elementary in the level of mathematics required and in the statistical procedures presented, it aims to give students both an understanding of the main ideas of statistics and useful skills for working with data" (Preface, pp xiv-xv). The key point here is "elementary in the level of mathematics required." Essentially, this is a math-lite version of statistics. With that in mind, the author did a decent job of passing on a working knowledge of statistics (I'll bet all the math in the book could fit on one 5x8 card). Also, the book has TONS of examples. I'd say that at least half of the text is just the author working through real-world examples. So, if you have trouble understanding the statistical concepts the author...

To Live Is Christ- Member Book

5 stars (Beth Moore is always excellent) - I really can't explain how helpful Beth Moore's workbook studies have been in my life. They've helped me to find a discipline with God that I never had before. I've learned so much about the Bible, and more specifically, about the real, true, loving God who cares so much for me and for you. If you're at all considering this study, please try it. I think you'll like it. Beth Moore seems to really try hard to keep her studies accurate, relevant, meaningful, and NOT shallow. They're as deep as you want to go with them. They're not fluffy stuff, they're studies that honor God and the women who love Him by assuming that you have a brain, that you love God, and that you want to be closer to Him, and frankly, that you're human with human weaknesses. Beth understands women, because she doesn't seem to be afraid to really be a real woman after God's own heart. 5 stars (Awesome study of Paul's life journey to Live in Christ) - What an awesome, in-depth look at the life of Paul! Beth Moore has obviously studied scripture with a prayerful heart to allow God to reveal this study through her. I have been challenged and enlightened through her words. Chemistry - The Molecular Science with CD-ROM- General ChemistryNow- and InfoTrac

5 stars (one of the best) - This book explains basic chemistry concepts very well. The chapter on entropy is great. The sequence of the topics covered is generally traditional. I like the idea that the chapter on solutions is placed after the basic concept of equilibrium is covered. Some organic chemistry is integrated into the text. I personally believe that the concepts of acid and base should be extended a little to prepare students for organic chemistry. This book has more pages (~1200 pages) than most other general chemistry textbook available (~1000 pages). I wish the publisher could have it available in two volumes so that it is easier for students to carry around and read it. 5 stars (Great book.) - This is the best general chemistry book I've used so far. It is easy to read. It covers what I need for the MCAT's general chemistry requirements. Good reference book. 4 stars (Very Very good Text) - I have a B.S. in Chemistry and am working on my teaching credentials to teach High School Chemistry. I wanted an overall good text for reference. I was searching for one that is readable but not too basic. This text is my choice for the best of both requirements. It has everything you would want in a Freshman College chemistry text. It also has great photos, graphics and tables. It is very easy to read and very interesting. I have not tried the CD ROM that comes with it. It must not be in favor right now. I bought my copy in great condition at a used texbook store (w/CD-ROM) for $21.95. (July 2004) ...
