Rising Tide- The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America

5 stars (Of Man and the River) - If you thought Hurricane Katrina packed a devastating whallop to the Louisiana and Mississippi Coast, wait until you read this engrossing story of the 1927 Great Mississippi Flood which inundated the entire Misssissippi Delta. Barry does a great job of providing the background for the levee system which has repeatedly failed the Delta because beauracrats were unwilling to bend to any common sense when it came to handling the mighty Mississippi. They insisted on building their levees higher and wider, channeling the river into a raging torrent come high water. The Army Corps of Engineers chose to cling to outdated manuscripts rather than study the situation first hand, which was repeatedly asked for by civil engineers who saw a monumental crisis in the making. Barry makes a good case for Eads' proposal for jetties in deepening the mouth of the Mississippi and creating a greater flow of water into the Gulf of Mexico. While this was done primarily to increase navigation into and from the Port of New Orleans, jetties would have made a lot more sense than a system of levees that essentially served to choke the river. To make matters worse the Corps systematically closed off spillways and refused to cut canals even after the 1922 flood should have served as a warning call. But, Barry treats the rising Mississippi as a metaphorical tool as well, describing Jim Crow South in intimate detail, contrasting the bigoted paternalism of the Percy family with the malignant growth of the Ku Klux Klan, and its impact on Southern politics. It is a well written book that focuses mostly on the Mississippi Delta, the cultural and economic battle for this prized acreage and the river that would ultimately engulf the region. 5 stars (Prophetic and lively read) - John Barry's superb RISING TIDE can be viewed through many prisms, but obviously today, we will all see it through post-Hurricane Katrina eyes. 2 stars (Earlier versions are better) - This book includes numerous tear-out exercises and cases. It might be appropriate for a classroom but it is not ideal for prospective entrepreneurs. Earlier versions of this book had good material on writing a business plan and determining appropriate sources of capital and less extraneous fillers. Save yourself a lot of money and buy a more practical book on the subject or the 1995 version if you want the business plan and financing materials. 5 stars (Book condition) - Very quick delivery. Book had some marks, but excellent condition. Would recommend strongly if you want the book right away. 4 stars (Comprehensive "Owners' Manual" for Entrepreneurs) - Like the previous reviewer, I too purchased the 4th Edition of this text (paperback), and was extremely pleased. Before starting my current business, I consulted extensively with this text, and was pleased with its comprehensive, practical nature - covering everything from a personality assessment of one's readiness for self-employment, to exhaustive preparation information for a business plan. The book also extensively covers financing an entrepreneurial venture, comparing both debt and equity (including Venture Capital) methodologies. On a practical note, I also like the fact that all the pages are perforated...there have been several that I have taken out and used hands-on! I cannot comment on the relative worth of this version vs. the newer version, as I only have the 4th edition. ...

1 stars (eye opening book) - very informative book. this kind of information will not be found in pharma sponsored publications. you owe it to yourself to pick this one up. 5 stars (This book saved my life) - Notice how all the negative reviews are from people who haven't even tried using the information in the book to cure themselves? Bunch of cynics and skeptics who would negate the book no matter what information it contains, because they think they're working for A Current Affair or something. Meanwhile, they're missing out on the most amazing book I've ever read. I am one of the world's biggest skeptics, I am an agnostic, I don't follow any religion, I don't believe in "new-agey" remedies, I don't believe in fate; I believe in science, not superstition. That's the point, this is not some crackpot or new-agey theory, everything stated by Dr Clark makes perfect scientific sense. I hadn't even read the book and I tried the "zapper" not expecting anything and actually hoping to discount it, but it instantly nearly cured me of manic depression and the constant flu-like / CFS symptoms I had been dealing with for years. As I continued the treatment, in conjunction with having all my mercury amalgam fillings removed, my situation continued to improve to the point where I can now live a totally normal life. Before starting Dr Clark's treatments, I couldn't even work a regular job and was sick, exhausted and depressed all the time. This is the most important book I have ever read and it saved my life!
