Applied Behavior Analysis for Teachers 7th Edition

2 stars (Late Shipping) - I used this company since it said that it will ship in 2 days. 14 business days later it finally arrived. When ordering school books with a due date, I will not use this company because it agrees to ship within 2 days. 3 stars (Regarding 7th Edition Only) - The 7th Edition is precisely what I find wrong with textbook publishing today. If you're a graduate student (or any student for that matter), you have probably noticed that new editions for textbooks are being released increasingly more frequently, rendering texts far less valuable for resale than they would ordinarily be. I went to the book store and found ABA for Teachers with both the 6th and 7th editions on the shelf. I was cynical about how much the book would have changed in roughly a year's time from one edition to the next, and sure enough, they are practically identical. It is almost humorous to note that the forewards of the two editions were not even modified. The paragraph on 'Updates' to the editions is the same, noting substantial changes to one chapter and the decision to retain a particular example about a mouse. I referred to the chapter in question, and it was the same in both books. By all appearances, the changes to the 7th edition (to my eyes) are all cosmetic and do not involve content. The 7th edition is almost one hundred pages shorter than the the previous edition, due it appears to the format being changed to more of a workbook-type, taller text. Also, the headings and sidenotes now have colored fonts in many instances. If having a taller, thinner text and colored fonts is worth the extra money to you, go ahead and shell out the extra money. Otherwise, don't let the book publishers get the last laugh and stick with the 6th edition which is in substance the same book. 5 stars (Great reference to understand the principles of ABA) - This book was the textbook which was prescribed for a graduate course that I took in Behavior Modification. Do I Really Have to Teach Reading-- Content Comprehension- Grades 6-12

5 stars (A Book for Every Teacher) - Whether you teach math, English, science, or any discipline in a school, this book will make you a BETTER teacher. In addition, when you apply Tovani's suggestions, your students will IMPROVE. This book is worth taking personal time outside the classroom to read. It will make your time in the classroom more purposeful. 4 stars (Practical, easy to apply strategies.) - This book gave me a lot of ideas for getting students to probe into a text to get beyond basic comprehension of a text to creating personal meaning from text. Her techniques are for every student, the talented and the struggling. The only frustrating thing I found about the book is she assumes all teachers work in ideal environments. She tells teachers to get parents to donate post its for the note taking strategy she uses. Parents at my inner city school would not do this. 5 stars (This book was SO helpful!) - I was assigned this book for a class this semester in my grad program. As a science teacher, I went into the class thinking, "Why do I have to take this class??" After the first day, I went to buy my textbook. That night we were assigned the first chapter. I sat down, to read just that chapter, but ended up reading the entire book. Tovani's style of writing is so easy to read and follow. There are items discussed in the book that you can incorporate into your first day of class, and things to use all year. I feel that with these ideas in place, my students are going to do much better in my class. My eyes are open now to the need for teaching reading in every subject. I would reccommend this book to first year teachers and well seasoned teachers alike. Thank you Ms. Tovani for writing such a great book! ...

The Art of Teaching Writing

3 stars (Review of The Art of Teaching Writing ) - Calkins book was an easy, yet informative read. As a education student, I learned a lot about how to motivate children to want to write. Calkins techniques are practical and simple. It seems that the book could be geared to not just elementary grades, but also to middle school ages. The examples of student writings were great. I will definitely be re-reading this book when I begin teaching in a couple of years. 4 stars (The Art of Teaching and Writing) - In the book The Art of Teaching and Writing, Lucy McCormick Calkins discusses various types of ways on how to instruct children to write efficient papers. The techniques that she illustrates in her book mostly came from her original ideas. These effective ideas could be used while instructing children or when teacher workshops are set up. Calkins writing style was very easy to read. She sets various examples to help illustrate her teaching techniques. One issue that I had with this book was the fact that the topics were too broad. Another problem that I have is that this book is not appropriate for elementary teachers. It could possible be used for middle school students but it is more suitable for teachers who are instructing High School Students. Overall, I feel that this book was organized very well and was easy to read. 3 stars (Good Book for Elementary School Teachers) - The Art of Teaching and Writing by Lucy Calkins is a book that I would recommend for new Elementary School Teachers. This book makes an attempt at illustrating how teachers can create creative writing lesson plans for young students. I must admit the size of this book was a little intimidating. It isn't really the type of book that you would read straight through, but perhaps skim through picking out material that pertains to what you want to convey to your students. 5 stars (Great activities) - This book has great activities with great debriefs. The book is written in a simple to use style with clear directives on how to conduct each activity. The activities are easily modified to fit different age groups and teaching points. As a trainer/educator I enjoyed using the activities and am glad to have this book in my bag of tricks. 3 stars (Beware the duplication from her other book!) - I got this book becuase I liked JOnes' other book Team-building activities for Every Group. I was so disapointe to find a dozen or more of the activities exact duplicates of ones from the other book. Word-for-word. Other activiites in this book are good, just didnt like the covert deception that i was getting 104 activities when i already had purchased some of the once! 4 stars (teaching children) - My son's teacher works with this book in her classroom and I find it has been helpful in helping him learn to manage his anger. All children today should be introduced to all of the skills mentioned in Alanna Jones book. Self-esteem, communication, coping skills are vital to raising a peaceful generation of children. My son's teacher has also introduced lessons on stress-management and self-esteem with "The Children's Awareness Curriculum." 5 stars (Fabulous resource!) - This book is an outstanding resource for all teachers of reading. It addresses a wide range of aspects of reading instruction, including phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and comprehension, to name just a few. For each area, the book includes several key sections: WHAT is ...?; WHY is ... important?; and HOW do you teach ...? The layout is simple to follow, and it is packed with excellent activities. It is truly amazing how much information is included in this one book. Most importantly, the content of the book is soundly based in current research that is presented in a very accessible way. The activities are well-designed and realistic, and all the necessary information is included to be able to implement the activity in your classroom. Every teacher should have a copy of this book! 5 stars (CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook) - CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook is a superior book to use as a reference in the classroom. It supports all areas of reading in grades K-8. Also it has wonderful advice about ELL students. Not only does this book have information about teaching reading, but it has hands on teaching methods that are proven practices. Some of the larger areas of the book are word structure, sound/print connection, decoding, spelling, vocabulary development, comprehension, reading and responding, and differentiated instruction. CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook greatly compliments Words Their Way, another must have book. One downfall about this book is the page numbering system, but as you work from the book it becomes less difficult. My first book was given to me from the California Reading and Literature Project and I'm buying another copy for my son, who is also a teacher. I would recommend this book to any teacher interested in improving their knowledge of teaching reading. I often review my teaching strategies with this book before finalizing my lesson plans. ...

The book was in almost-new condition, it arrived within 5 days after I placed the order, AND the cost was 50% less than the used book price at my college bookstore! I'll be searching Amazon again next semester! 5 stars (A VERY GOOD MATH BOOK!!!!!!) - So often, math textbooks are beyond anyone's comprehension. Here is one book that has changed all that! I Read It- but I Don-t Get It- Comprehension Strategies for Adolescent Readers

Would love to have the author for a school inservice or training. 5 stars (Wonderful Resource!!!) - I am an assistive technology specialist and wanted to be able to communicate effectively with teachers about lower tech strategies they can use in their classroom. I now will give them a few strategies and point them to this book. I took notes throughout my first reading to ensure I can more readily recall details---I only do this when it's worth the effort! Creating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction 4th Edition

5 stars (Creating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction (4th Ed)) - This book gives so many examples of the qualities to look for and teach in writing instruction. I especially like the fact that this edition is more inclusive of secondary ideas and samples. With this book as a guide, it is hard to miss what is important to the writing instructional process. The information is comprehensive and user friendly. 4 stars (Great info, inconvenient format) - Creating Writers got me charged up and well-prepared for teaching sriting/revision using the 6 Trait model. Spandel writes well, using a combination of research-based information and personal anecdotes to keep the reader's attention. I appreciate the number and variety of samples she included for practice revision/assessment. The samples were, however, not very easy to duplicate for classroom use. The print is too small and there are often two samples on one page, or one sample on several pages. The layout is difficult to work with. Overall, though, the book is excellent. I have been to two training sessions about 6 Traits, but it took Spandel's book to get me hooked and enthusiastic, and made me confident about using the 6 Traits in the classroom.The information deserves a 5 star rating. Bringing Words to Life- Robust Vocabulary Instruction

5 stars (Lifesaver) - This book came during my summer vacation when my motivation to read was quite low........I read it in one sitting and got so many ideas for my work with language impaired elementary school students. It is timely and appropriate for all age levels. Many educators are looking for research based best practices and this is a great reference! 5 stars (Bringing Words to Life in the classroom!) - Being a teacher, I found "Bringing Words To Life" very helpful. I've gotten so many good ideas to bring to the classroom. Today, we have so many children who sit in front of the television or are focused on video games that they don't have enough real life experience to relate to vocabulary. Having necessary vocabulary skills is very important in reading comprehension. If a child doesn't understand what they're reading then they won't be able to comprehend the story. Reading the story has given my not only ideas to enhance vocabulary but it's given me the inspiration to be creative. I would suggest any teacher read this book to become inspired! 4 stars (Bringing Words to Life) - Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction is a good book to use for resource of ways to teach vocabulary. I found Chapter 4: Developing Vocabulary in the Earliest Grades to be the most helpful for finding ideas on how to teach vocabulary to my reading groups. 5 stars (Always remember...) - The reader is another person. Regardless of the rules, talk to that person! Lay it out in human terms... Than another person can relate to. There is no excuse for bad writing. - Clint Arthur, author of "Free Your Love Now" 4 stars (Embrace the Power that is Turabian!) - I used this for several years as an undergrad, and now that I'm being sucked into APA-heck, I look back on it fondly. It covered everything I ever needed to know to write a paper. Some reviewers have complained that it is not sufficiently modern, that it does not provide a citation style for web pages, etc. This is incorrect. Section 8.141, on page 151, shows us how to do this. (Some ellision from the demonstrated form will probably be necessary, but it works.) You didn't invent the internet, kids. It's been around for a few years, and the grown-ups really do know about it. Turabian, Grossman, and Bennett did make several assumptions about the reader of their book. They assumed he or she is capable of using a table of contents, and of reading rather large chunks of text and assimilating or marking the relevant portions. If one lacks the intellectual fortitude to do that, one should probably skip this manual and ask their instructor if they can use the "Golden Books" or "DC Comics" manual of style. 5 stars (Accentuate the positive) - Have you ever noticed that more people read the good reviews more than the bad ones? This book is appropriate for what it is meant for. If you know Turabian died prior to a new edition of the book, then maybe you should be using your PC to search for electronic resources (using Turabian font in the search engine)..... and not wasting time being negative... ...

Literacy for the 21st Century - A Balanced Approach 4th Edition

5 stars (The best reading methods textbook I've found) - I teach a course in elementary reading methods for undergraduate education students. This is the third textbook I've tried, and it is excellent! It has what students need to know about the theory and practice of teaching reading, written in a very readable, non-overwhelming way. Plus it has lots of practical teaching ideas. Our lab school saw it and ordered several copies for its teachers also. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (A must have!!) - I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!! You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I absolutely love it! 5 stars (Excellent resource for teachers) - This is an excellent resource. It is concise and contains a wealth of information. I teach second grade and am working on a Master's degree in literacy. I am finding this book to be invaluable. Much of the information is sorted into charts for easy referencing. So many of the books I have read lately seem to ramble on and on. This book makes it's point and moves on to other salient information. I get rid of so many of the professional books I purchase after I read them. This one is a keeper. It is very pertinent to the current trend in improving the literacy of our children. ...

The Story of the World- Activity Book One- Ancient Times- Second Edition

5 stars (Must have!) - I re-visited the idea of getting the activity book when my friend had all these amazing project ideas, coloring pages and activity pages--all from the activity workbook. It's tremendous, thorough, and does a lot of research and thinking for you. It's a fabulous extension of the Story of the World books. 5 stars (A great compliment) - We are 4 weeks into enjoying Story of the World Book 1 and have found the activity book to be a great complement. The suggested activities for each chapter make the text come alive. The group of coloring pages alternates between informative (but not overwhelming) maps and coloring pages appropriate to the text. I was especially pleased to coincidently (?) see a full color illustration in one of my mother-in-law's books on ancient Egypt that matched my daughter's coloring page version. We might have done the narrative retelling on our own, but having the narration guidelines helps. I like the activity book and don't know what we'd do without it! 4 stars (Great Story) - This is a great introduction to Western Civ. for children. It contains fictional stories, as well as information about people and places from this time period. ...

The Courage to Teach - Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher-s Life

2 stars (Not typical style) - I have heard many speak highly of the book, but I just don't get it. There is passion in his style and his delivery encouraging teachers to maintain integrity, to stay true to themselves, and so forth. I guess that I lose interest due to the verbose language used. There are many aspects to teaching, and it is a lot of work; I am not equating this aspect to success or failure for connection with the students. As I said, many that I have spoken to enjoy it... I don't. 5 stars (The Courage to Teach - Palmer) - The book was in excellent condition. The box was partially opened, but the product unharmed. Audrey 4 stars (for any educator at any grade level!) - I read this for a graduate school assignment. It is a good book. Parker believes that classrooms should be subject-centered, not student-centered. It is very interesting why he states this. I actually liked the book the second time I read it. He goes on about not losing your identity while you teach and about not copying techniques that are not true to yourself. He gives a lot of insightful information. I recommend it to anyone in the field of education. I actually think I appreciated it more due to the fact that I have teaching experience. ...

Building Construction Illustrated- 3rd Edition

3 stars (Informative but could be more detailed) - The book is informative and well illustrated. It's written for the professional builder. This book provides more detail than some of the other books I've studied on building construction. However, the book could be more specific about recommended methods and provide more detail. For example, the book describes using joist hangers to install floor joists. It should also suggest that if possible, joist hangers be nailed to the RIM board or beam before the RIM board or beam is installed. 4 stars (Building Construction Illustrated, 3rd Edition by Francis D. K. Ching) - a fairly good book for Architects and students. It covers a lot of topics about construction. 5 stars (Awsome Book) - This book is excellently written and illustrated. A great resource for anyone involved in construction. ...
